GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Senior forward
Asher Jones from Tampa Preparatory School has been selected the 2024 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Soccer following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school boys' soccer coaches and media representatives.
Jones scored 34 goals and added eight assists in leading his team to a 19-1-2 record and the Class 3A state championship. He has signed to play soccer at the University of South Florida.
Jones, who was earlier named the Class 3A Player-of-the-Year, tallied 138 points in winning this year's award. Class 5A POY Josh Chandler was the runner-up with 79 points, followed in order by Class 7A POY Jose Moyetones of Windermere (69), Class 2A POY Juan Garanton of Carrollwood Day (20), Class 4A POY Juan Buenrostro of Desoto (15) and Class 6A POY Grant Wheeler of Niceville (10).
Smith won the Coach of the Year award after leading his Tampa Prep team to a 19-1-2 record and the Class 3A state title. In 16 years, Smith has posted a 195-72-45 record with five state titles (2010-12-13-22-24).
Smith tallied 83 points in winning this year's award, with Class 2A COY Kelvin Jones of Carrollwood Day finishing second with 74 points. Class 4A COY Scott Davidson of Gulliver Prep was third with 69 points, followed by Class 7A COY Marcelo Castillo of Boca Raton (49), Class 6A COY Lionel Brown of Broward (41) and Class 5A COY Jonathan Hammond of Arnold (24).
The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers' commitment to the state's youth. This is the 32nd year of these unique awards as we honor the state's top athletes and coaches in 31 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
